Hear, hear! Seth Horowitz on listening and hearing.
Earlier this month, Seth Horowitz, who is an auditory neuroscientist at Brown University, and who I regrettably never came across during my tenure there, released his book The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind.
The New York Times ran a great essay by him, a paen to listening and why it’s so important (and to my mind, creative, as well). My favorite quote?
“Listening tunes our brain to the patterns of our environment faster than any other sense.”
I hope that technologists are listening, too. We might hear patterns as easily as see them, map our sounds and noises, hear things like global warming that are perhaps too slow to see.
